HAVE YOUR BOOKED a team spot yet for the Library’s annual Summer Quiz. The theme for this year’s quiz is ‘Growing Up in the 1950s’, so if you spent some of your childhood in the 50s then this is for you.
Keep the grandchildren entertained
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR again – the school holidays. For those of you lucky enough to have family with grandchildren staying with you don’t forget the library has a good selection of children’s books for all ages, from toddlers right up to 12-year-olds and older.
There’s also a good selection of DVDs for those times when they get bored. You never know, granny and grandad might enjoy Happy Feet and Paddington or one of the many other children’s DVDs in our collection.
Keep a lookout for our next two book reviews, which will feature titles from the Richard and Judy Summer Selection, doubtless providing us with their usual selection of good and interesting reading.
Don’t forget our annual quiz coming up on Tuesday August 22, with a 1.30pm for 2pm start, when the challenge will be on to beat the Fishermen’s Friends, last year’s winning team.
Our annual summer quiz usually proves popular. The questions will again be set by Ken Sheldon, accompanied by Maggie struggling with the pronunciation as usual. The bar opens at 1.30pm and again during the interval, when tapas will be served. At €6 per head it’s a bargain for an afternoon’s entertainment.
Visitors are always welcome to join us during Library opening hours, Monday and Friday 3pm-5.30pm and Wednesday and Saturday 10pm-1pm. Refreshments are served in the garden on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
Major work scheduled for summer
MAJOR RENNOVATION WORK in the main room of the Library is scheduled to take place over the summer, starting on Monday, July 3.
Inevitably this will cause some disruption to the day-to-day running of the Library, although everything will be done to ensure that the impact on members and volunteers will be kept to the absolute minimum.
We are determined not to allow the work to distract from members’ enjoyment of the Library facilities.
During this time if there is a particular book or DVD you require, or you have any other type of query, please do not hesitate to ask one of our volunteers for assistance; we are here to help.
Tea and coffee will be continue to be served on Wednesday and Saturday mornings as usual. We are rather like the old Windmill Theatre in that ‘We Never Close’; we will soldier on – minus the tassels of course.
Finally, don’t forget our Summer Lunch at the Masaru Hotel in La Paz, planned for Thursday, July 13, with a 1pm for 1.30pm start. Book at the Treasure’s Desk to ensure your place at this always-popular venue.
Refreshments are served in the garden on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
Dates and donations
NEXT up on the Library social calendar is a lunch at the popular Algorrobo restaurant, La Paz, on Thursday May 11, with a 1pm for 1.30pm start. Three-course meal includes wine, all for €15 a head.
Book at the Treasurer’s Desk as soon as possible.
Future events being planned include a lunch at the Masaru in La Paz in July, to be followed by our annual Summer Quiz in August, so you have plenty of time to get your teams together.
We recently received a substantial donation of 300 DVDs and would like to place on record our sincere thanks to the gentleman donor for his generosity.
Some very up-to-date books have also been donated and we have just purchased 28 new titles mostly from the top 100 bestsellers chart.
We are always grateful to receive donations of books and DVDs – so that book you hastily purchased at the airport and have now read, please don’t forget the library.
Visitors are always welcome to join us during our opening hours, Monday and Friday 3pm to 5.30 pm and Wednesday and Saturday 10pm to 1pm.
Refreshments are served in the garden on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
