Under normal circumstances, and renowned for good value and for a relaxed, welcoming and friendly environment, the Library would be hosting a number of social events throughout the year. The annual list of activities includes garden parties, ladies lunches, a pig roast, quizzes, illustrated talks, art exhibitions, to name just some. Sadly, given the government’s Covid-19 restrictions, we are currently not able to organise any such events. This situation is being reviewed every month.
Many of these events take place in our colourful sub-tropical garden.
These activities have come about partly because of changing times, but also due to changing attitudes to traditional libraries.
With this in mind, the managing committee has encouraged an active social calendar. Of course little is new, as you can read in the early minutes of the library committee – when they organised dances, a piano had to be hired for sixpence, and oil procured for the lamps.
Over the last few years, members and their guests have been encouraged to stay for morning coffee, served in the garden, after having chosen their books and DVDs.
Most Wednesday mornings, a small but dedicated team tend to the gardens – they never turn away volunteers. Like all the many library helpers, they give freely of their time and enthusiasm.
We feature all future activities on our Facebook page.
