AS WE PREPARE to welcome back our winter swallows, most of whom will be drifting back during October and November, it seems timely to remind members of one or two upcoming events.

The Library has been asked to host a talk on “The UK and Spain: Beyond Brexit” by Mr Tim Hemmings, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Madrid. It is, as expected, proving to be very popular so if you wish to attend we would urge you to let us know as soon as possible by email to englibrary@outlook.com.

The talk, to be held on Wednesday, October 18 at 3.30pm for a 4pm start, will be followed by a question and answer session.

Our new Film Club gets under way on Thursday, October 26 at 1.30 for lights down at 2pm.

The first movie to be shown will be the much acclaimed The Zookeeper’s Wife (review below). Refreshments and ice creams will be available during the intermission. If you wish to attend, please book in advance at the Treasurer’s desk.

The Zookeeper’s Wife: The time is 1939 and the place is Poland, homeland of Antonina Zabinski and her husband, Dr Jan Zabinski. Warsaw Zoo flourishes under Jan’s stewardship and Antonina’s care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are forced to report to the Reich’s newly-appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. The Zabinskis covertly begin working with the Resistance and put into action plans to save the lives of hundreds of Jews by using the zoo’s hidden tunnels and cages to save them from Nazi brutality.

To those who may be new to the island, please be aware that visitors are always welcome to visit us during our opening hours (Mondays and Fridays 3-5.30pm; Wednesdays and Saturdays 10pm to 1pm). Refreshments are served in the garden on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
