Meet the Adventurers who set out to conquer Tenerife

18th August 2021 by Ken Fisher Leave a Comment

KEN FISHER, Library President and leader of the popular Tenerife History Group has produced a series of articles on some of the extraordinary 19th century figures who set out to explore Tenerife and, in some cases, to scale the heights of Mount Teide when the island’s upper reaches were still wild and untamed.

They were variously scientists, explorers, botanists or just plain and simple adventurers, though they all shared the same passion and thirst for unlocking the mysteries of the world around them.

Find the articles at https://englishlibrarytenerife.org/category/tenerife-adventurers/

Under normal circumstances, the Tenerife History Group meets on Thursdays mornings between 11am and 12.30pm.

It tells the story of rescue pup Bella and her adventures as she embarks on a journey of over 400 miles through the wilds of New Mexico and Colorado to find the owner who rescued her from abandonment on a demolition site.

Along the way she meets an assortment of lovable characters, enriching the lives of each of them.

Warmth and wit as Cornish fishermen hit the music charts

14th July 2019 by Graham Taylor

The next Film Club showing at the Library is Fisherman’s Friends, another warm and witty British film, this time telling how a group of Cornish fishermen came to achieve a top-ten hit with an album of traditional sea shanties.

Loosely based on real-life events and filmed in picturesque Port Isaac on the north Cornish coast, Daniel Mays plays a cynical London music executive who reluctantly heads for Cornwall for a stag weekend with a challenge from his boss to sign to their record label a group of shanty-singing fishermen.

Gradually, he finds himself being drawn into the local community as he begins to learn the meaning of loyalty, love and friendship. Also starring are James Purefoy and Tuppence Middleton

As ever, Film Club screenings are strictly for Library members only and there is no entrance fee. Refreshments will be on sale, including ice creams, during the interval.

Lights go down at 2pm on Thursday, July 25

A heartwarming story inspired by two comedy legends

3rd June 2019 by Graham Taylor

LAUREL AND HARDY, the world’s greatest comedy team in their day, face an uncertain future with their golden era of Hollywood films long behind them.

Diminished by age, the duo set out to reconnect with their adoring fans by touring variety halls in Britain in 1953.

After a faltering start, the shows become hugely popular, but Stan and Ollie can’t quite shake the past as long-buried tensions and Hardy’s failing health start to threaten their precious partnership.

With Steve Coogan as Stan Laurel and John C Reilly as Oliver Hardy, the duo’s nostalgic story is beautifully filmed and told, their comic genius shining through despite their declining years.

‘Not to be missed’ is an overworked phrase in the movie publicity world, but in this instance the description is fully justified.

As always, Film Club screenings are strictly for Library members only. There is no entrance fee, though we do charge for refreshments including ice creams, served during the interval..
