THE OSCAR-WINNING Bohemian Rhapsody, a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, has been chosen for the next Film Club screening.

Freddie shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They achieve unparalleled success, but Freddie, under the influence of darker forces, turns his back on Queen to pursue a solo career. It doesn’t pan out quite as he planned and the band reunites just in time to play the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium.

Rami Malek (pictured above) won the Best Actor Oscar – one of a long list of international awards – for his brilliant portrayal of the troubled singer. The recreation of Mercury’s Live Aid performance is a 21-minute cinema masterpiece.

Despite his recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music, cementing the Queen legend, which continues to inspire music lovers around the world to this day

Lights go down at 2pm sharp. As with all Film Club screenings, admission is free but strictly limited to Library members only. There will be an interval for Ice cream and other refreshments.

A REMAKE of the great James Stewart classic from 1950, Harvey, has been chosen for the next Film Club showing at the Library on Thursday, April 25.

Elwood P. Dowd, a mild-mannered-but-eccentric bachelor has for a companion Harvey, a six-foot-tall rabbit that only he can see. All’s well until Elwood’s social-climbing sister, Veta, and her teenage daughter, Myrtle Mae, come to live with him and fear his odd behaviour will undermine their ambitions.

When Elwood disrupts the ladies’ first afternoon tea party by introducing wealthy Aunt Ethel Chauvenet to Harvey, Veta sees that something must be done right away.

Starring Leslie Nielsen, Harry Anderson (pictured above) and Swoozie Kurtz, this 1996 version of the 1944 Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play was better received than most remakes – and was certainly more highly regarded than the 1972 made-for-TV version, which had also starred James Stewart as Dowd.

As with all Film Club screenings at the Library, the lights go down at 2pm sharp. Admission is strictly limited to Library members only and there is no admission charge.

Traditional refreshments, including ice cream, will be on sale during the intermission.

MICHAEL CAIN’s latest blockbuster, the true-crime tale King of Thieves, is the next Library Film Club screening on Thursday, February 28.

Cain heads the star-studded cast of big-name Brits, including Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent, Ray Winstone, Charlie Cox, Paul Whitehouse and Francesca Annis.

Caine stars as one-time notorious thief Brian Reader, now retired but still dreaming of pulling off one final ‘big job’.

To that end, he recruits a gang of fellow retired criminals to plot robbery on a previously unprecedented scale at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit.

Posing as maintenance workers, the gang managed to escape with over £200 million worth of jewels.

All Library film screenings start at 2pm sharp and admission is strictly limited to Library members only. There is no admission fee, though traditional refreshments, including ice cream, will be on sale during the intermission.

A MODERN Disney classic, Christopher Robin, is our next Film Club screening on Thursday, January 24.

This heart-warming tale brings all the Winnie-the-Pooh to life in real-action animation as Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor), now a family man living in London, gets to share more adventures with his childhood playmates and along the way get an understanding of the important things in life.

THE LIVES OF four lifelong friends are turned upside down to hilarious ends after reading the infamous 50 Shades of Grey in their monthly book club, catapulting them into a series of outrageous life choices.
