WE’RE BACK in thriller mode with this month’s collection of new titles added to the Library shelves, beginning with the latest from one of our most popular writers, the prolific James Patterson.
There are also offerings from English writers Francis Spufford and Jane Fallon, Ricky Gervaise’s partner, and another in the Detective DD Warren series of novels from American writer Lisa Gardner.
AS WE PREPARE to welcome back our winter swallows, most of whom will be drifting back during October and November, it seems timely to remind members of one or two upcoming events.
The Library has been asked to host a talk on “The UK and Spain: Beyond Brexit” by Mr Tim Hemmings, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Madrid. It is, as expected, proving to be very popular so if you wish to attend we would urge you to let us know as soon as possible by email to englibrary@outlook.com.
YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED that many of the books on the market today, and indeed on our Library shelves too, are crime thrillers, murder mysteries and detective stories.
The same applies to many newly-released DVDs. There’s no denying their popularity, though; they make a thoroughly good read and very watchable films and television series.
A RELATIVELY NEW young London-born writer takes centre stage in our review of the latest books to hit the Library shelves. Rod Reynolds had a successful career in advertising for many years and completed his first novel while studying on a two-year Crime Writing Masters course at the City University.
His debut book, The Dark Inside, was set in 1946 Texarkana, a town on the border of Texas and Arkansas, and introduced us to Charlie Yates, a reporter sent to cover a spate of brutal murders. His follow-up work, Black Night Falling, takes place a few months later back in Arkansas.
Rod still lives in London with his wife and two daughters. He is also the son-in-law of one of our volunteers.
THE FILM CLUB is strictly for Library members only and there is no charge for admission. Films shown include a mix of new releases as well as occasional older classic suggested by Library members.
Light refreshments, coffee, tea, ice-creams, etc are available during the intermission, for which a small charge is made.
Film shows are held on on a regular basis. We are also planning to stage the occasional theme-associated film afternoons with an accompanying light buffet afternoon tea. One idea is to show the classic Brief Encounter with station buffet-style refreshments during or after the show. There will be a charge for these events, but the price will include the refreshments.
We are keen to hear from members the type of films, or even specific titles, they would like to see presented.
